Radiesse vs. Sculptra: The Best Collagen Stimulator

the art of aesthetic assessment

In this blog from Youthology Medical in New York, we go over the benefits of Radiesse and Sculptra.

Collagen Stimulation With Cosmetic Injectables

Collagen is a type of protein found in muscles, tendons, skin, ligaments, and bones. It plays an important role in providing strength to the skin and improving its elasticity and hydration. Collagen fibers act as a base for elastin and hyaluronic acid, which are responsible for skin’s elasticity and hydration. However, with age, the body produces lesser and lesser amounts of collagen, resulting in thinner, drier, and less elastic skin, as well as wrinkles.

The signs of collagen loss may be subtle at first, such as flatter cheeks and hollows forming under the eyes. Unless you’ve recently lost a lot of weight, these are likely signs of collagen depletion. This affects the way you look and feel, as collagen is responsible for skin elasticity. When collagen decreases, the skin becomes less firm, leading to wrinkles and fine lines caused by dehydration and thinning of the skin.

Fortunately, thanks to modern advancements in the beauty industry and our commitment to providing our customers the very best, Youthology Medical can offer a number of options when it comes to collagen stimulation, including dermal fillers such as Radiesse and Sculptra.

What Is Radiesse?

Radiesse stimulates the body’s natural collagen using Calcium Hydroxyapatite. This filler helps volumize and remove fine lines along the face and hands. Calcium hydroxyapatite is biosynthetically produced for treatment, but the compound is found naturally in human bones. In addition, when diluted with saline, known as hyperdilute Radiesse, it can be used (off-label) to induce collagen production by the skin and tighten the skin in several areas of the body, including the face, neck, arms, legs, abdomen and buttocks.

What Is Sculptra?

Sculptra is a dermal filler that acts as an alternative anti-aging treatment to skin creams and fat injections. It stimulates the production of collagen, an important structural protein found within our connective tissues. It works to promote collagen growth through the use of poly-L-lactic acid, a synthetic, biodegradable compound, using the body’s natural processes to remove lines and promote collagen development which restores a youthful appearance. Three monthly treatments are recommended to achieve desired results, with occasional touch-ups to keep it long-lasting.

Which Is Better: Radiesse Or Sculptra?

  • Radiesse and Sculptra both operate with different scientific approaches. Sculptra works by activating the body’s natural process of producing collagen. When it is injected, the body’s immune system produces fibroblasts (connective tissue cells) to surround the “foreign body” – the filler – which makes the skin firmer and thicker. On the other hand, Radiesse is non-inflammatory. The combination of hydrogen, oxygen and carbon in the gel creates a structure that mimics connective tissue, and it acts as a support for the new tissue that grows around the injection site. In addition to stimulating collagen production, Radiesse also adds volume due to its thick, elastic and adhesive properties. It needs to be injected more deeply into the skin than Sculptra.

  • You can expect different results, depending on which cosmetic injectable is used. Sculptra provides a subtle, natural-looking increase in volume that happens gradually over time. As collagen is not produced instantaneously, you will not see the results right away; it could take up to six weeks. However, the payoff for your patience is a youthful, natural-looking appearance that can last for more than two years. On the other hand, Radiesse offers a more immediate volumizing effect, somewhat like an implant. It can last between one to one and a half years, but once injected, it cannot be taken out as easily if you are not satisfied with the results. If you are just starting out, it is better to try Sculptra first.

  • You should consider the targeted areas when it comes to choosing between Radiesse or Sculptra. Sculptra is a great option for reducing marionette lines, smile lines, wrinkles, and scars, as well as defining the jawline and adding volume to hollow temples and cheeks. However, it is not recommended for use under the eyes or on the lips. Radiesse, on the other hand, is perfect for treating the folds and wrinkles around the mouth and nose, as well as plumping the skin on the hands and restoring lost fat in the facial area. Please note that it should not be used on areas with thin skin.
