Why Do the Neck, Chest, and Hands Show Aging?

The face often gets the daily serums and sunscreen, while the neck, chest, and hands receive far less attention. Over time, that difference becomes visible as crepey texture, uneven color, fine lines, and rough patches. At Youthology Medical in Melville, our physician-led team uses Contour TRL™ erbium laser resurfacing at a depth suited to the concern. Our founder and medical director,Dr. Craig Grobman, is a board-certified physician, while Lisa Panetta-Ringel, LE brings more than 20 years of aesthetics experience and advanced certification in laser therapy.

Why Aging Looks Different in Each Area

Collagen naturally declines with age, and years of ultraviolet exposure gradually alter tone and texture. Each area also has its own reasons for showing wear:

  • Neck: Thin tissue and constant movement can make horizontal lines and a crepey appearance easier to see.
  • Chest: The décolleté receives considerable sun exposure and often develops brown spots, redness, fine creases, or sleep lines.
  • Hands: Frequent exposure, washing, and limited daily SPF can leave the backs of the hands looking rough, spotted, or wrinkled.

Extending broad-spectrum sunscreen and moisturizer below the jawline is one of the simplest ways to limit additional damage.

How Erbium Laser Resurfacing Works

Contour TRL removes damaged outer layers with adjustable intensity. NanoLaserPeel offers lighter exfoliation for early dullness or minor roughness. MicroLaserPeel reaches farther for more visible changes, while deeper resurfacing is suited to pronounced wrinkles or sun damage. Healing also prompts collagen renewal, so the treated area continues to improve over time.

Recovery depends on depth. Shallow sessions typically involve one to two days of downtime, while deeper resurfacing can require one to two weeks. Redness, peeling, and swelling are expected during healing.

ProFractional Laser Resurfacing takes a different approach. It creates narrow microchannels while leaving nearby tissue intact, supporting collagen production and a smoother appearance without treating the entire surface.

Which Treatment Matches the Visible Change?

Not every sign of aging calls for resurfacing. During an assessment, we look at what is creating the most noticeable change:

  • Roughness, fine lines, and surface damage: Contour TRL or ProFractional could be appropriate.
  • Brown spots or redness: Forever Body BBL HERO® IPL may be a better match when discoloration is the main issue.
  • Mild looseness: SkinTyte is intended to improve firmness rather than remove damaged outer layers.
  • Significant sagging or volume loss: Resurfacing will not restore lost volume or lift advanced laxity.

Our broader selection of laser treatments allows us to choose one technology or combine methods based on the area and the recovery time you can reasonably manage.

Recent tanning, active irritation, certain medications, and a history of cold sores can affect preparation or timing. A new, changing, bleeding, or nonhealing spot should receive medical evaluation before cosmetic treatment.
